How Roofers Get Into the Google Map Pack (2026 Playbook)

Search “roofing companies near me” and look at what loads first: a map with three businesses. For roofing contractors, those three listings generate more phone calls than everything below them combined. Homeowners tap the call button without ever visiting a website. Here’s how Google chooses its three, and how to become one of them.

How Google Picks the Three

Google’s local algorithm weighs three factors:

  1. Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Categories, services, description, and the content on your linked website.
  2. Distance: proximity between your business location and the searcher. You can’t fake this one, but you can work around it (more below).
  3. Prominence: how well-known and trusted your business appears: review count and quality, citations, links to your site, and profile activity.

Distance is fixed. Relevance and prominence are entirely buildable, which is the whole game.

The Playbook

1. Get the profile fundamentals perfect

  • Primary category: “Roofing contractor.” Not “Contractor,” not “Construction company.” Secondary categories for real sublines only (gutters, siding).
  • Fill every service with real descriptions. Google matches these against searches like “flat roof repair.”
  • NAP consistency. Your name, address, and phone must match your website and every directory exactly. Old addresses and tracking numbers scattered across the web quietly suppress rankings. Cleanup is a core part of our local SEO service.
  • No keyword-stuffing the business name. “ABC Roofing - Best Roofers Manchester NH” violates guidelines, and competitors report it. (Yes, they do. We do.)

2. Build review velocity, not just review count

A profile with 80 reviews that stopped growing a year ago loses to one adding 6 real reviews a month. What works:

  • Ask every customer, the day the job closes and the yard is clean, when happiness peaks.
  • Text the direct review link; don’t email instructions.
  • Reviews that mention your city and service (“replaced our roof in Bedford”) are worth extra, and customers write them when your request mentions the job.
  • Respond to everything, especially the bad ones. Future customers read responses; so does the algorithm.

3. Feed the profile weekly

Google rewards active profiles: job-site photos (geotagged by your phone automatically), posts about recent projects, Q&A answers. Fifteen minutes a week, or an agency that does it for you, beats the dormant profiles that dominate most markets.

4. Fix your website’s local signals

The profile links to your site, and the site’s authority flows back into Map Pack rankings. That means service pages that match your profile’s services, city pages for your service area, local schema markup, and a site that loads fast on phones.

5. Earn local prominence

Citations on the directories that matter, membership links (chamber, BBB), sponsorships, and local press. This overlaps heavily with link building: every genuine local link raises both organic and map rankings.

The Distance Problem (and the City-Page Answer)

Your Map Pack strength decays with distance from your address. A roofer in Dover will struggle to crack the Map Pack in Salem, forty miles south, no matter how good the profile.

The answer isn’t fake offices (Google prunes those aggressively). It’s organic city pages: genuinely local landing pages that rank in the regular results for “roofing companies salem nh,” capturing the searches your map presence can’t reach. Our whole New Hampshire location hub is a working example of the architecture.

Spam: The Map Pack’s Dirty Secret

Many roofing Map Packs contain fake listings: lead-gen fronts with rented addresses and stock photos. You can report them (Google Business Profile → “Suggest an edit,” or the Business Redressal form), and cleaning two fakes out of your pack is as good as gaining two positions. It’s routine maintenance inside our local SEO campaigns.

How Long Does This Take?

Profile fixes show effects in weeks; review velocity and prominence build over months. In most NH markets, a systematic campaign reaches stable Map Pack presence in 3–6 months. The full arc is in our timeline guide.
